"Not as good as the other titles" 2009-07-28

I am writing specifically about the book "101 Living Rooms: Stylish Room Solutions" from Good Homes magazine. I have several of their books, and quite like them, because they are small and portable and generally have good ideas. However, I think this one falls short compared to others in the series. Despite the fact that the books is divided into several 'style' sections, they mostly appear to look alike, with nondescript furniture and generic decorations, and mostly 'modern' in feel. The information itself isn't bad, but if you're looking for suggestions for a specific style, I'm afraid I can't recommend this book. Also -- and this is what I personally found irritating -- if you look closely, you'll see they use THE SAME ROOM for a number of shots and so-called 'styles'. There is a particular fireplace that shows up in at least 7 different pictures, with only a new paintjob and a carpet either laid down or taken up. I find it hard to believe that there are 7 different places, with the same fireplace in the same color, with the windows in the same position facing the same way. So I felt a bit cheated when I realized that. At least with the other books, they actually went out to find different real-world examples. But with this one, it seems the editors took the lazy way out. It may be an inexpensive book, but I'd save my money and look elsewhere.

There are several decorating books in this series. These are published in the UK, so much of these ideas are geared toward small space-saving ideas. Great photos, quick, simple tips and explanations. If you live in a small space, all these books are great.
